My grandmother's father was George Macon. George was one of five children of Beverly Macon. Who was listed in the 1870 census as owning land and livestock. My family is African American and all of My Grandmother's siblings own land and homes in New Kent to this day. I would love to find out more. Thank you C. Macon for this blog and for including ALL of the information - the "good, the bad, etc." I am sorry for the hateful comments written here. They are uncalled for. We (African Americans) would know more about our origins if hatred and shame weren't in the way of learning the truth. I was not brought up to be racist and truly hate that detail in the geneaology. There are many others in my families who were abolitionists. My Norwegian ancestors didn't arrive until 1905 so had no experience with slavery. I understand the reasons behind the slavery as this was a tough country to conquer and there weren't many people to begin with. I have a Scottish ancestor who was sold on the docks of Boston because he and a shipful of soldier friends were on the wrong side of a war with the English and were chained and marched to the sea to board a ship to America. Slavery has always been a dark fact of history and goes on today. We all need to be aware of that and fight it when we can so we can put an end to suffering!
By the way, my line to the Macons is through my father by way of his grandmother, my great grandmother, Julia Hunt Macon. I have been all around where the family was from, but was unaware of it at that time. I hope to visit there again to see it with new eyes.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17059600534284235729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2069846428848596774.post-13177305181436472162020-07-12T02:10:41.792-07:002020-07-12T02:10:41.792-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.smailmonan2000https://www.blogger.com/profile/10404264845817923951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2069846428848596774.post-22655378287162175492018-10-19T16:08:01.131-07:002018-10-19T16:08:01.131-07:00Your ancestor could have been born on a Macon fami...Your ancestor could have been born on a Macon family plantation. In my research I found three primary locations for the Macon family: New Kent Virgina, Granville, North Carolina (Macon Manor), and Randolph county, North Carolina. Macon's have lived in Randolph county since the mid-1700's and my dad and uncle were the last known to me to have been born there from my direct lineage. All of the famous relatives I have found were from Gideon's children and grandchildren.
-Gideon's daughter, Martha Macon is grandmother to Martha (Dandridge) Washington.
-Gideon's son, John Macon is grandfather to Nathaniel Macon (former Senator of North Carolina and speaker at the house of representatives.) Ever see Macon cities or counties? They are named after him!
-Nathaniel's great-great nephew was Uncle Dave Macon (Banjoist and entertainer; he's in the country music hall of fame) There is a 3 day music festival held every year in his honor (event is in July in Murfreesboro,Tennessee).
-John Macon III, Gideon's great grandson is the great-great-great grand father of Max Cullen Macon (Major league baseball player who played for the St Louis Cardinals, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Boston Braves throughout the 30's and 40's).Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17261029587789876717noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2069846428848596774.post-17307299784205570322018-04-09T18:43:03.890-07:002018-04-09T18:43:03.890-07:00I am doing a history research on macon family . I am having so much fun looking up our fami...Hello,
I am having so much fun looking up our family histories with my children. Their Dad passed away 2 years ago, so this has special meaning to us. He was John Charles Macon, Jr., born in Washington, DC in 1973. Most of his Macon relatives live in Birmingham, Alabama, and Atlanta, GA. I believe his family are descendants of Gideon Macon. My Mom's family were a union of Yancey and Sizemore families, in Southwestern VA. It is very interesting...and strange!...to see that several Macon and Yancey marriages have happened through US history. This is slightly less shocking when I learn that the Virginia Yanceys sprang from 4 brothers: Charles, William, Joel and Robert, who came from Wales in 1642 with Sir William Burkley, later governor. They settled in the James River section, so they would have been neighbors with the Macons...? I've heard that Nathaniel Macon was Speaker of the House under Thomas Jefferson. I just read that Major Joel Yancey owned an estate near Forest Depot, Bedford County, VA, where he entertained his nearest neighbor, Thomas Jefferson, who mentions Major Joel Yancey favorably in one of his books. Thank you for the information you've posted, I really appreciate all your hard work documenting this history! Joyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15212774504650079191noreply@blogger.com
